There are some weddings that stay with you because of the photographs you took and then there are weddings that stay with you because of the people. Suzette and Stephen’s Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding is one of those weddings for me. Looking back at their photographs brings back much more than memories of a wedding day. It brings back memories of a family that I have photographed for years and a family that has welcomed me into their homes and their lives so many times that photographing them no longer feels like arriving at a stranger’s wedding.
I have been taking photographs for this family for what feels like forever. I have watched their memories unfold through my camera and every time I get the opportunity to photograph another special occasion for them I feel incredibly lucky. There is a familiarity there that is difficult to explain unless you have experienced it yourself. I know the faces. I know the personalities. I know the people who will make everyone laugh and I know the people who are going to get emotional. Most importantly they know me and trust me to capture their memories.
So when Suzette and Stephen celebrated their wedding at Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding venue, I already felt completely at home.
And then there was Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding venue.
Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding venue has always been one of my favourites. I mean, it has horses. As a Sagittarius I feel like I should probably be legally required to love a place with horses, although I am fairly sure that is not how astrology works. There is just something about the rustic atmosphere of Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding venue that I absolutely love. It feels different from a polished modern wedding venue. It has character. It has history. It has texture. Most importantly it has a personality of its own.
That made photographing this Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding such a pleasure.
A Beautiful Ou Stal Equestrian Estate Wedding
Suzette and Stephen’s wedding had a classic and elegant feel while still fitting beautifully into the rustic character of the estate. Suzette wore a beautiful white wedding dress and Stephen looked incredibly smart in his blue suit. The colour combination worked so well with the natural surroundings and the warm character of the venue.
The wedding décor at Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding venue, continued that elegant feeling with white details and styling that complemented the venue rather than trying to completely transform it. That is something I always appreciate as a photographer. When a couple chooses a venue with so much natural character it is often better to let the venue be part of the story rather than cover every inch of it with décor.
Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding venue already has that beautiful rustic atmosphere. The old buildings and equestrian surroundings create a setting that feels warm and timeless. Add a bride in a white dress and a groom in a deep blue suit and suddenly you have a wedding gallery that feels romantic without being overly staged.
For me the best wedding photographs are always the ones where everything works together naturally. The couple should remain the heart of the photograph while the venue gives the image its sense of place.
That is exactly what I felt while photographing Suzette and Stephen.

There is always something special about photographing a bride getting ready because it is the beginning of the story. Before the ceremony starts and before the guests arrive there is usually a completely different atmosphere. There is excitement in the room and a little bit of nervous energy too.
Suzette looked beautiful in her white wedding dress from Margaret Petersen Dressmaker. The dress had an elegant bridal quality that suited her perfectly and photographed beautifully against the natural surroundings of Ou Stal.
Her hair and make-up were done by CLau Dash Hair Studio and everything came together to create a timeless bridal look. I love photographing these details because they become part of the bigger story when the gallery is complete. Years later you might not remember exactly who was standing in the room while you were getting ready but you will be able to look back at those photographs and remember the feeling.
There is always that moment when a bride is finally dressed and everyone around her realises that the wedding is really happening. I love watching that moment unfold through my camera. Sometimes there are tears and sometimes there is laughter. Sometimes there is a little bit of both.
The photographs don’t need to be overly posed. Some of the most beautiful bridal photographs happen naturally while everyone is simply moving around and enjoying the excitement of the morning.
Stephen’s Blue Wedding Suit
Stephen chose a blue suit from Mr Suit Hire and it suited him beautifully. The blue worked particularly well against the greenery and rustic tones of the estate and gave his photographs a classic but confident feel.
I think grooms sometimes get forgotten when people talk about wedding photography. So much attention naturally goes towards the dress and bridal details but there is a whole story happening around the groom too.
There are the conversations with his friends. There are the last-minute adjustments to his suit. There are jokes that probably shouldn’t be repeated in the wedding album. There is the nervous excitement of knowing that in a few hours he is going to be standing in front of everyone he loves and marrying the person he has chosen to spend his life with.
Those moments are just as important to me as the bridal preparations.
When I photograph a wedding I want the final gallery to feel like a complete story rather than a collection of pretty photographs. That means Stephen’s story matters just as much as Suzette’s.

This is something I want to say about Suzette and Stephen’s wedding because it really is what made the experience different for me.
When you photograph a family repeatedly you start to feel connected to their story. You aren’t just turning up with your camera for another job. You are seeing people you know and people who have trusted you with their memories over and over again.
I have been welcomed into their homes. I have photographed moments that are important to them and I have watched their family memories grow through my photographs.
That is something I never take for granted.
Photography is a business for me but it is also something incredibly personal. People invite me into some of the most important days of their lives. They trust me when they are emotional and vulnerable and they trust me to capture the people they love.
When that trust develops over years it becomes something very special.
So being able to photograph this Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding felt a little different. There was already a relationship there. I didn’t need to spend the day trying to work out who everyone was because I already knew many of them.
That allowed me to focus even more on the moments happening around Suzette and Stephen.

The couple always comes first.

That is the approach I have always preferred with my couples.
I will absolutely help you with posing when you need it. I will tell you where to stand and where to look when necessary. But I also want you to forget about me for a while.
Go back to being yourselves.
Talk to each other.
Laugh.
Hold each other.
Enjoy the fact that you are married.

The Horses And The Equestrian Setting
I cannot write about this Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding without talking about the horses.
They are such a wonderful part of what makes this venue unique. There is something incredibly romantic about having horses as part of the environment surrounding a wedding. It gives the photographs a feeling that is difficult to create anywhere else.
For me as a photographer it is also simply fun.
I love finding ways to incorporate the surroundings into photographs without making them feel like a staged photograph for the venue. The horses and the rustic setting are there because they are genuinely part of Ou Stal and that makes them part of the couple’s story too.
When Suzette and Stephen look back at their photographs years from now I want them to remember the whole experience of their wedding. Not just the ceremony and reception but the place where they celebrated it.
That is one of the reasons I love location photography so much. A photograph can remind you not only of who you were with but where you were and what that place felt like.
A Wedding With A Timeless Feel
There are certain colour combinations that never really go out of fashion and Suzette and Stephen’s wedding was a perfect example.
The white of Suzette’s dress and the blue of Stephen’s suit created a classic foundation while the natural surroundings of Ou Stal brought warmth and texture into the photographs.
The décor by the Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding team worked beautifully with that setting. Instead of competing with the venue the styling allowed the rustic character of the estate to remain visible.
That balance is something I really appreciate.

I want them to remember the hugs and the laughter. I want them to remember who was there. I want them to see expressions they may not have noticed on the day because they were busy being the bride and groom.
A wedding day goes incredibly quickly. The couple cannot possibly see everything that happens.
That is one of the reasons photography matters.
I get to see it for them.
The Little Moments I Look For

I have a soft spot for Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding venue and I think that is pretty obvious.
The horses certainly help.
But there is more to it than that.
I love the rustic feel. I love the character of the estate. I love the fact that it feels connected to its surroundings rather than looking like it could be anywhere in the world.
I also love the people behind the venue.
The owner is genuinely lovely and that matters more than people sometimes realise. A wedding venue isn’t just buildings and gardens. It is also the people who help make the day happen.
When the people working behind the scenes are welcoming and invested in what they do the whole experience feels different.
That feeling comes through in the photographs.

Of course there are photographs where I will guide you into a particular position because I know the light is beautiful or the background is perfect. But once I have you there I want you to interact naturally.

That might mean walking together while talking about something completely unrelated to the wedding. It might mean standing close and taking a quiet moment. It might mean laughing because I said something ridiculous behind the camera.
Whatever gets you to relax is fine by me.
My goal is not to make every photograph look identical. My goal is to create a gallery that feels like you.
With Suzette and Stephen that was particularly easy because there was already so much familiarity and trust between us.
The Team Behind The Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding
Of course a wedding day is never created by the couple and photographer alone. There are so many people working behind the scenes to make everything come together.
For Suzette and Stephen’s wedding the bridal and bridal party dresses were created by Margaret Petersen Dressmaker. Stephen and the other suits were supplied by Mr Suit Hire and the wedding cake was created by Tahieras Cake Dot Com.
The flowers and décor were handled by the Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding team while GTR DJ Crew provided the music and entertainment. CLau Dash Hair Studio took care of hair and make-up and Quinton Schweni provided the wedding car hire.
And then there was me, behind the camera, documenting the day as Poplap Photography.
Every person involved had their own role in creating the experience and when everything comes together properly it allows the couple to concentrate on what really matters.
Being married.
Celebrating with their family.
And actually enjoying their wedding day.
Why I Still Remember Suzette & Stephen Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding
There are hundreds of weddings I could write about and every one has its own story. But Suzette and Stephen’s wedding stands out because of the history behind it for me. This wasn’t simply a couple I met and photographed once. This was another chapter in a relationship I have built with their family through photography. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing people again and again and being trusted to document their lives. It reminds me that photography is not just about one photograph. It is about a collection of memories built over time. A family photograph here. A celebration there. Another milestone a few years later. And eventually a wedding.

Looking Back Through Their Wedding Photographs
One of my favourite things about having photographed a wedding is going back through the gallery later.

That is when little things start standing out.

Those are the photographs that make me love what I do.
They remind me that I wasn’t simply photographing a wedding.

I don’t just want to photograph what your wedding looked like. I want to photograph what it felt like.
I want you to be able to look at a photograph years from now and remember the person standing next to you. I want you to remember the people who surrounded you. I want you to remember the laughter and the nervous moments and the ridiculous little things that happened between the important moments.
And I want you to remember the place.
For Suzette and Stephen, that place was Ou Stal Equestrian Estate wedding venue.
A rustic estate with horses, history and a warmth that makes it one of my favourite venues to photograph.
But ultimately the venue is only part of the story.
The real story is Suzette and Stephen.
Their relationship.
Their family.
Their memories.
And the beginning of another chapter together.
I feel incredibly honoured that I was able to stand behind my camera and preserve a small piece of that chapter for them.
