Some weddings are memorable because they are grand and elaborate. Others stay with you because they are completely different from anything you have photographed before. Nicola and Renaldo’s Morgensrust wedding is one that I remember for exactly that reason.

There was something wonderfully relaxed about their day from the very beginning. It wasn’t a traditional evening wedding with a formal dinner followed by hours of dancing. Instead, Nicola and Renaldo chose to celebrate their marriage during the day with a beautiful Breakfast Wedding filled with good food, family, laughter and some of the most unusual little details I had seen at a wedding.

After photographing weddings for more than ten years, I have learned that it is the personal touches that often make a wedding memorable. You can photograph hundreds of beautiful dresses, bouquets and table settings but every now and then a couple comes along and creates a day that has its own personality.

That was Nicola and Renaldo.

And as a photographer, those are the weddings I love.

A Morgensrust Wedding With a Difference

Morgensrust Function Venue is situated in Joostenbergvlakte in the Cape Winelands and is surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of a working olive and lavender farm. The venue specialises in daytime weddings and functions which made it a particularly fitting choice for Nicola and Renaldo.

There was something about the daytime setting that suited them so well.

A Morgensrust wedding already has a naturally relaxed quality because the farm surroundings don’t need to compete with the celebration. The landscape provides its own character and the natural light creates beautiful opportunities for photography throughout the day.

For Nicola and Renaldo, the daytime setting became part of what made their Breakfast Wedding so special. Rather than waiting until the evening to celebrate with their guests, they were able to enjoy the wedding while the day was still bright and the atmosphere was fresh and lively.

It felt more like a wonderful gathering of people who had come together to celebrate something incredibly important.

There was no feeling that the day needed to follow a particular formula.

It simply needed to be theirs.

Nicola’s Timeless Bridal Look

Nicola looked beautiful in her elegant white wedding dress.

Her dress had a strapless design with a timeless quality that suited her perfectly. It wasn’t overloaded with unnecessary detail and instead had a beautiful simplicity that allowed her to be the focus.

When photographing a bride, I always look for the little things that make her feel like herself. The dress is obviously an important part of the wedding story but the way she feels wearing it is what really comes through in photographs.

Nicola carried herself with such natural elegance and confidence and that made her bridal portraits particularly lovely to photograph.

There was also something beautiful about seeing her against the more rustic surroundings of the Morgensrust wedding venue. The contrast between the elegant white dress and the natural farm setting created photographs that felt timeless rather than overly styled.

Renaldo and his groomsmen wore grey suits which worked beautifully with the soft pink dresses worn by the bridesmaids. The colour palette was gentle and understated and fitted the daytime atmosphere perfectly.

It was one of those combinations that didn’t need to shout for attention.

It simply worked.

The Food Made This Breakfast Wedding Special

Now, the food is something I absolutely have to mention because this was one of the things that made the Breakfast Wedding so memorable.

Instead of the traditional wedding reception meal, Nicola and Renaldo treated their guests to a wonderful selection of breakfast and brunch-style food.

There were stuffed pancakes, eggs, breads and fresh fruit along with wors and cheese platters. There were muffins, chicken sosaties and fried tomatoes with cheese as well.

There was plenty to photograph and even more for the guests to enjoy.

As someone who has photographed a lot of weddings, I loved seeing something different being served. Food can completely change the atmosphere of a wedding reception and this Breakfast Wedding had that wonderful feeling of everyone gathering around food and enjoying themselves without the formality that can sometimes come with a traditional wedding dinner.

And there is a funny little personal story attached to those tomatoes.

I am allergic to tomatoes.

So while everyone else could happily enjoy the fried tomatoes with cheese, I was very much aware of keeping my distance!

It is one of those silly little things that probably wouldn’t mean anything to anyone else but it is exactly the kind of random memory that stays with you after photographing a wedding.

Years later I can look at the photographs from this Morgensrust wedding and immediately remember the breakfast spread and think, “Oh yes, the tomato wedding!”

That is the thing about being a wedding photographer. You don’t just leave with thousands of photographs. You leave with little memories of the day too.

The Fish That Became Wedding Centrepieces

Then there were the fish.

I have photographed enough weddings to know that there are certain décor trends you see again and again. Flowers, candles, greenery, table runners, glassware and beautiful centrepieces all have their place.

But I don’t think I have ever photographed another Morgensrust wedding quite like this one when it came to the table décor.

Nicola and Renaldo kept their décor relatively minimal and then added little fish as the centrepieces.

There were fish in bowls along with gold and silver fish details.

It was completely unexpected.

And I loved it.

The fish gave the tables a playful personality without taking away from the rustic atmosphere of the celebration. It was a perfect example of why I always encourage couples to include things that mean something to them rather than feeling that every part of a wedding needs to follow the latest trend.

The little fish weren’t there simply because they were fashionable.

They were there because they were fun.

That made them worth photographing.

For me, these are the details that make wedding galleries more interesting. When I look through a Morgensrust wedding gallery years later, I want there to be photographs that immediately take the couple back to their day.

A little fish sitting on a table might seem like a small thing.

But when Nicola and Renaldo see that photograph years from now, they will know exactly where they were and what that day felt like.

A Rustic Wedding Cake

The wedding cake continued the rustic feeling of the day.

Nicola and Renaldo chose a three-tier white cake decorated with green plants and succulents. It was beautiful in its simplicity and fitted perfectly with the natural character of the Morgensrust wedding venue.

I loved how the cake didn’t feel overly formal.

The white cake gave it that classic wedding appearance while the greenery brought in the rustic countryside feeling that ran through the rest of the celebration.

There was a lovely consistency throughout the day. The bride’s elegant white dress, the soft pink bridesmaid dresses, the grey suits, the natural surroundings and the green details on the cake all worked together without looking as though everything had been forced into one particular theme.

It simply felt natural.

That is often the secret to beautiful wedding styling.

You don’t necessarily need hundreds of decorations.

You need the right details.

Why I Loved Photographing Nicola and Renaldo

One of the things I remember most about this Morgensrust wedding is how relaxed the day felt.

Nicola and Renaldo were clearly comfortable together and that made photographing them such a pleasure.

When couples are genuinely enjoying each other’s company, you don’t have to manufacture every photograph. You can give them a little direction and then step back and let their relationship do the rest.

That is the kind of photography I love.

I don’t want every image to look like the couple has been placed into exactly the same pose as every other wedding couple. Of course there are moments where I will guide you because I want to make sure you look your absolute best, but I also want to capture the things that happen naturally between you.

A glance.

A laugh.

A hand reaching for another hand.

The little smile that happens when one person says something only the other person understands.

Those are the moments that make photographs feel alive.

Nicola and Renaldo had that natural sense of fun between them and it came through beautifully during their couple photographs.

Their Morgensrust wedding wasn’t only visually interesting. It was enjoyable to photograph because the people themselves made the day enjoyable.

There is something I really enjoy about photographing a daytime wedding.

The light is completely different from an evening celebration and the atmosphere tends to feel lighter and more relaxed. At a Morgensrust wedding, the farm surroundings become part of the story rather than simply being a backdrop.

The olive and lavender farm gives the venue a natural countryside character and the Joostenbergvlakte setting provides plenty of visual texture.

For Nicola and Renaldo, this worked particularly well because their Breakfast Wedding already had a relaxed personality.

The whole day seemed to flow naturally.

And I could move around with my camera looking for those little moments that might otherwise be missed.

When I photograph a Morgensrust wedding, I don’t want to come home with only a collection of pretty portraits. I want to tell the whole story. That means photographing the details that the couple carefully chose, but it also means photographing the people and the atmosphere surrounding them.

With Nicola and Renaldo, the fish centrepieces were part of that story. So was the breakfast food. So was the wedding cake. So were the soft pink dresses and grey suits. One of the things I enjoy about Cape Winelands weddings is that every venue has its own personality.

A Morgensrust wedding has a particularly peaceful farm-style atmosphere. The working olive and lavender farm gives the venue a sense of place and the daytime-only approach makes it different from many traditional wedding venues. For couples who want a celebration that feels relaxed and personal, that can be incredibly appealing.

Nicola and Renaldo’s Breakfast Wedding showed just how beautifully a daytime celebration can work. Their wedding didn’t need an elaborate evening reception to feel special. The combination of their people, their food, their styling and the setting created everything they needed.

From behind my camera, I could see how comfortable everyone was. There was a sense that people were there to enjoy themselves rather than worry about whether everything looked perfect. And honestly, those are some of my favourite weddings to photograph. Perfect doesn’t mean everything has to be flawless. Perfect can simply mean everyone is happy to be there.

There are certain wedding galleries that make me remember exactly why I chose photography in the first place.

Not because it was the biggest wedding I had photographed. Not because it followed every traditional wedding expectation. In fact, quite the opposite. It was memorable because it had personality. It had food that felt different. It had décor that made me smile. It had a cake that suited the rustic setting. It had a beautiful bride and a smart groom. But most importantly, it had two people who were celebrating something incredibly important with the people they loved.

I could photograph the same venue ten times and come away with ten completely different stories because the people are different.

And then there was the relationship between the two of them. That is always what I come back to.

Because when everything else has been packed away and the flowers have faded, the photographs of the two of you are what remain. The way you looked at each other. The way you laughed together. The people who stood beside you. The moments you didn’t even realise were happening. That is the reason I love photographing weddings. I get to preserve a little piece of someone’s life exactly as it happened.
