Some weddings are beautiful because of the venue. Others stand out because of the décor, the flowers or the little details that have been carefully planned for months. Then there are weddings where the couple themselves are what you remember most. Mikyla and Darren’s Alphen Centre wedding was definitely one of those for me.
There was something wonderfully relaxed about the two of them at Alphen Centre wedding venue. They have so much fun together and that made them incredibly enjoyable to photograph. They were not afraid to laugh, joke around or simply be themselves in front of the camera. As a photographer, those are the couples I love working with because I don’t have to manufacture every moment. I can give them a little direction when needed and then step back and let their relationship tell the story.
Their wedding had a beautiful rustic character with soft pink, burgundy, green and white details throughout the day. Mikyla wore a classic white wedding dress while Darren chose a green and khaki-toned suit that suited the relaxed styling perfectly. The bridesmaids wore pink and the groomsmen wore burgundy, creating a lovely combination for the bridal party photographs.
But beneath all the styling and beautiful details was something much more important. This was a couple who clearly enjoy doing life together.
A Beautiful Alphen Centre Wedding
Mikyla and Darren chose Alphen Centre wedding venue for their wedding celebration and the setting worked beautifully with the atmosphere they created. Their décor and draping were handled by SR Catering and brought together a warm rustic look with natural details such as acorns, wooden elements and other touches that gave the reception a relaxed country feel.
I really enjoy weddings where the décor feels connected to the couple rather than simply being chosen because it is currently popular. There was something personal about the styling of Mikyla and Darren’s celebration. The natural textures worked beautifully alongside the softer pink tones and deeper burgundy details, creating a setting that felt warm and welcoming.
The table details were particularly special because they included little facts about Mikyla and Darren. It was a lovely way of bringing their personalities into the reception and giving their guests something personal to discover while they were sitting at their tables.
One of the facts shared was that Mikyla and Darren had bought their own home together in 2018. They were therefore already building a life together before their wedding day arrived at Alphen Centre wedding venue. Their wedding wasn’t simply the beginning of everything. It was a celebration of a relationship and a life they had already started creating together.
Mikyla’s Elegant Bridal Look
Mikyla looked beautiful in her white wedding dress from Elegance Material. The dress had a classic bridal feel which worked wonderfully against the more rustic styling of the wedding. Her white dress also became a beautiful contrast against the pink, burgundy and green colours worn by the rest of the bridal party.
Hadassah Nail and Beauty took care of her make-up while Bronwin styled her hair. Those final details came together beautifully and gave Mikyla a timeless bridal look that photographed naturally throughout the day.
There is something I particularly enjoy about photographing the bridal details before the wedding really gets going. There is usually a mixture of excitement and anticipation in the room. The bride is surrounded by people who are helping her get ready and everyone knows that the next few hours are going to disappear incredibly quickly.
It is easy to focus on the dress itself but I also want to capture everything happening around it. The hands helping with the final details, the conversations between the bride and her bridal party and those little moments of excitement before she walks towards the person she is about to marry.
Those photographs become part of the story just as much as the ceremony and couple portraits.
Darren’s Green And Khaki Suit
Darren chose a green and khaki-toned suit for the wedding which gave his look a slightly more relaxed and distinctive feel. His groomsmen wore burgundy while the bridesmaids wore pink, creating a colour palette that worked beautifully with the rustic décor.
I liked that Darren’s suit did not simply blend into the rest of the bridal party. He looked like the groom while still fitting naturally into the overall styling. The earthy tones of his suit also worked particularly well with the natural textures used throughout the reception.
Wedding photography is full of little visual decisions like this. When I photograph the bridal party, I am always looking at how the colours, clothing and surroundings work together. But I am also looking for the relationships between everyone because those are what make the photographs feel alive.
A perfectly coordinated bridal party is lovely to photograph but the laughter between them is what makes the images memorable.
A Rustic Wedding With Personal Details at Alphen Centre wedding venue
The rustic styling was one of my favourite parts of this Alphen Centre wedding. There was a lovely use of natural elements throughout the décor, including acorns and wooden details which gave the tables and reception space a warm character.
The styling wasn’t trying to compete with the couple. Instead, it created a setting where the people remained the most important part of the day.
The table facts were another detail that I thought worked particularly well. Weddings can sometimes become so focused on beautiful decorations that the personal story of the couple gets lost. Mikyla and Darren did the opposite by using their reception décor at the Alphen Centre wedding venue as an opportunity to tell their guests a little more about themselves.
We learned that they had bought their own home together in 2018 and there was also a fun fact about Mikyla being one of four children, the only girl and the youngest. Apparently she was also the most attractive, according to the family facts shared at the wedding at the Alphen Centre wedding venue.
That gives you a pretty good idea of the kind of humour and personality surrounding this couple.
Those are exactly the details I love finding at weddings because they give me more than something pretty to photograph. They give me a little glimpse into the people behind the wedding.
Mikyla And Darren Have So Much Fun Together
If I had to describe Mikyla and Darren in one word, it would probably be playful.
There was such a natural sense of fun between them throughout the day. They weren’t constantly trying to look perfect for the camera and that made their photographs feel much more genuine.
I always tell couples that they don’t need to know how to pose. That is my job. What I want from them is simply to be themselves and interact with each other.
Some couples need a little more encouragement at first because having a camera pointed at you can feel strange. Others relax almost immediately. Mikyla and Darren seemed to settle into it very naturally because they were already so comfortable together.
That gave me the opportunity to photograph the little things that make their relationship theirs. Their expressions, the laughter, the way they stood close to each other and the moments where they completely forgot about the camera.
Those are the photographs that I hope they will treasure.
Taking The Wedding Portraits To Rhodes Memorial before going to the Alphen Centre wedding venue
As part of the photography, we also took Mikyla and Darren and their bridal party to Rhodes Memorial for photographs. It gave us a completely different environment from the wedding venue and added another layer to their gallery.
Rhodes Memorial is one of those Cape Town locations that gives photographs a strong sense of place. The stone architecture and surrounding landscape create beautiful opportunities for both bridal party photographs and couple portraits.
I enjoy using locations like this because they allow the photographs to change throughout the gallery. Instead of every image having the same background, we can move around and find different perspectives, light and compositions.
For the bridal party photographs, it also gave everyone a chance to relax and have some fun together.
And with this particular group, that came very naturally.
The photographs from Rhodes Memorial became an important part of their wedding story because they looked and felt different from the images taken at the reception. They added variety while still keeping the focus firmly on the people.
Photographing Mikyla & Darren As A Couple at Alphen Centre wedding venue
The couple portraits were some of my favourite photographs from the day because Mikyla and Darren didn’t need to pretend to be anything other than themselves.
There is a big difference between photographing a couple who are trying to look romantic and photographing a couple who genuinely feel comfortable being close to one another.
I want my couples to be able to look at their photographs and recognise the way they actually interact. I don’t want every image to feel like a magazine shoot where the couple has been placed into a perfect pose.
There should be movement.
There should be laughter.
There should be quiet moments at the Alphen Centre wedding venue.
There should be photographs where you are looking at the camera and photographs where you aren’t even aware that I am taking the photograph.
That mixture is what gives a wedding gallery its personality.
With Mikyla and Darren, I could let them interact naturally and capture those moments as they happened. Their chemistry did the rest.
A Bridal Party Full Of Colour at Alphen Centre wedding venue
The bridal party looked fantastic together. The bridesmaids wore pink while the groomsmen wore burgundy and Darren stood out in his green and khaki suit.
The colour combination worked especially well against the natural surroundings at Rhodes Memorial. The deeper burgundy gave the photographs some richness while the pink softened the overall look.
Mikyla’s white dress naturally became the centre of the bridal party photographs and Darren’s suit gave the group a little extra character.
I always enjoy photographing bridal parties because there is usually a completely different energy compared with the couple portraits. Everyone is excited, there is often plenty of teasing and the group dynamic gives you opportunities for photographs that feel much more spontaneous.
Those photographs become important too because the bridal party often includes some of the people who have been part of the couple’s lives long before the wedding day.
Their First Dance Was Completely Their Own at Alphen Centre wedding venue
One of the most memorable parts of this Alphen Centre wedding was the first dance.
Mikyla and Darren decided that a traditional first dance wasn’t really for them. Instead, they chose a selection of songs they both loved and combined them into a choreographed dance.
They had actually practised the routine before the wedding and when the moment arrived, they were ready.
Rather than simply standing together and slowly dancing around the floor, they twisted, moved and had fun with the music. It was energetic and playful and completely suited their personalities.
I loved that they chose to do something different at Alphen Centre wedding venue.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a traditional first dance if that is what a couple wants. But I also love seeing couples take traditions and make them their own. A wedding doesn’t need to follow a particular formula to be meaningful.
Mikyla and Darren’s first dance was memorable because it reflected them.
They chose songs they loved, they practised together and then they got out there and enjoyed it.
That is exactly what a wedding should be.
The Story Behind The Wedding at Alphen Centre wedding venue
One of the things I love about being a wedding photographer is getting small glimpses into a couple’s life.
I don’t just photograph the wedding itself. I get to see little pieces of the relationship and the people who have helped shape it.
The fact that Mikyla and Darren had already bought their own home together in 2018 tells us something about their relationship. They were already building something together and their wedding was another step in that journey.
Mikyla being the youngest of four children and the only girl also gives us a little glimpse into the family dynamic surrounding her.
Then there is the way they chose to approach their first dance and the amount of fun they had together throughout the day.

The big moments are important. Of course they are.
The ceremony, the first kiss, the couple portraits, the speeches and the first dance all deserve to be photographed properly.
But there is another story happening around those moments.
It is the bridesmaid laughing with the bride.
It is the groom’s friends making jokes while they get ready.
It is a parent watching their child walk into the ceremony.
It is the couple sharing a quick glance when nobody else is paying attention.
It is the laughter that happens between formal photographs.
Those moments are easy to miss if the photographer is only focused on the schedule.
I try to stay aware of everything happening around me because those little pieces of the day are often what make a wedding gallery feel complete.
When Mikyla and Darren look through their photographs years from now, I don’t want them to only remember the things they knew were being photographed. I want them to discover moments they didn’t even realise had happened.

This is what I love most about photographing weddings.
Every couple gives me something different to work with.
Some couples are quiet and romantic. Some are emotional. Some are energetic. Some are constantly laughing. Some are a mixture of everything.
Mikyla and Darren were playful, relaxed and completely comfortable together.
My job wasn’t to change that.
My job was to photograph it.
That is why I prefer a natural approach to wedding photography and at Alphen Centre wedding venue. I will guide you when you need direction and I will make sure we capture the important photographs but I also want you to have space to actually experience your wedding day.
You shouldn’t spend your wedding worrying about whether your photographer has enough photographs.

Why I Love Photographing Weddings at venue like Alphen Centre wedding venue
There is a reason I keep coming back to weddings with a camera, like at Alphen Centre wedding venue.
It isn’t simply because I enjoy photography.
It is because I love people.
I love seeing families come together. I love watching the nervous excitement before the ceremony. I love the laughter during the reception and the quiet moments when couples finally have a chance to breathe.
Most of all, I love knowing that the photographs I take become part of someone’s family history.
The flowers will eventually disappear.
The cake will be eaten.
The music will stop.
The decorations will be packed away.
But the photographs remain.
Years from now, Mikyla and Darren will be able to look back at their Alphen Centre wedding and see not only how they looked but who was there, what they wore, how they celebrated and how much fun they had together.
That is a pretty special thing to be trusted with.

Looking back at Mikyla and Darren’s Alphen Centre wedding, I think the thing that stands out most is how much personality they brought into the entire day.
The rustic décor, natural details and warm colour palette created a beautiful setting. Mikyla looked gorgeous in her white dress and Darren’s green and khaki suit gave him a distinctive look that suited him perfectly. The pink bridesmaids and burgundy groomsmen added beautiful colour to the bridal party photographs and the table facts at the reception at Alphen Centre wedding venue, gave guests a personal glimpse into their lives.
The photographs we took at Rhodes Memorial added another beautiful part to their story and gave us the opportunity to create something different from the reception images.
But more than anything, I remember the two of them at Alphen Centre wedding venue.
They have fun together.
That sounds like a simple thing but I think it is one of the most important qualities a couple can have. Marriage is going to bring serious moments, difficult moments and plenty of ordinary moments but being able to laugh together is something worth holding onto.
Their first dance was a perfect example of that. They didn’t simply follow tradition because they were expected to. They chose songs they loved, created their own routine and had an absolute blast performing it together.
That is the kind of story I want their photographs to tell.
Not simply that they had a beautiful wedding and Alphen Centre wedding venue is eautiful.
Not simply that the venue looked beautiful.
Not simply that the décor was carefully planned.
But that Mikyla and Darren were completely themselves at Alphen Centre wedding venue.
They laughed. They danced. They celebrated with the people they loved and they started another chapter of the life they were already building together.
And I was lucky enough to be there with my camera to capture it.
