Veronique & Melrick | Stellenbosch Community Hall Wedding

There are some couples who become more than just a wedding in my photography journey. Veronique and Melrick are one of those couples. Their story with me actually started before their wedding day in 2020. I photographed their couple shoot in 2018 and years later I would photograph their wedding day and then continue capturing more beautiful chapters of their family life. So when I look back at their Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding I don’t just remember one day. I remember the beginning of a photography relationship that has continued to grow over the years.

Their wedding at Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding had such a beautiful colour palette of maroon, gold and white. It was elegant without feeling overdone and every part of the day carried little details that brought those colours together. From the flowers and bridesmaid dresses to the gold decorations and candles the whole celebration had a warm and romantic feeling.

Getting Ready

The wedding morning started with Veronique getting ready at Hydro Stellenbosch while Melrick was getting ready in Cloetesville. I always love this part of a wedding day because there is something special about the hours before the ceremony. Everyone is getting ready and there is excitement in the air while the bride and groom are still in their own separate spaces preparing for the moment when they will finally see each other.

Veronique looked absolutely beautiful in her wedding dress from Zenobia Thys Couture. The dress was elegant and feminine with beautiful details across the top. The fitted design had sheer tulle around the hips which gave the dress an almost floating effect before flowing into the tulle at the bottom. It was one of those dresses that had plenty of detail without losing its timeless elegance.

She paired her dress with gorgeous maroon shoes which were the perfect little pop of colour against the white gown. Her bridesmaids wore long maroon maxi dresses which worked beautifully with the overall colour scheme of the wedding. The deep maroon shade also tied in so naturally with the roses and other floral details throughout the reception.

Melrick chose a light grey suit with a maroon tie which brought his look into the wedding colours without making it too formal. But what I remember most about his outfit were his white Nike Air Force shoes. I loved that little bit of personality. A traditional suit paired with comfortable white sneakers made his wedding-day look feel like him rather than simply following a traditional formula.

The groomsmen also wore light grey suits which created a lovely contrast against the maroon dresses of the bridesmaids. Together the bridal party looked coordinated while still allowing Melrick and Veronique to stand out as the couple at the centre of it all.

A Maroon, Gold and White Wedding at Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding venue

The Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding reception was filled with gold and maroon details. Gold-painted beer bottles were used as part of the decor which was such a fun way of taking something ordinary and turning it into part of the wedding styling. There were candles and flowers throughout the tables with maroon and white flowers bringing colour into the otherwise soft and elegant setting.

The main table was particularly beautiful with maroon-red flowers mixed with fine green leaves and candles. There was something very warm about the combination of candlelight, greenery and deep red tones at the Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding venue. It created a romantic atmosphere without needing an excessive amount of decoration.

I also loved the little floral details at the Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding venue. Some of the flowers had that beautiful daisy-like appearance while the roses added a richer maroon-red colour. The greenery softened everything and stopped the colour palette from becoming too heavy.

The cake continued the same theme. It was a beautiful white cake decorated with gold details that almost looked like golden chocolate dripping down the sides. Maroon and red roses were added with fine green leaves to bring the floral details from the reception tables onto the cake.

And then there was dessert.

The lemon meringue pie was absolutely delicious. Weddings are always full of beautiful things to photograph but every photographer also has those little memories that have nothing to do with the camera. I definitely remember that dessert!

What I loved about photographing Veronique and Melrick was that their connection felt very natural. Having already photographed them together in 2018 I wasn’t meeting them for the first time on their wedding day. I already knew them as a couple and that made photographing their wedding feel even more personal.

There is something special about watching a couple go from a couple shoot to a wedding and then eventually seeing their family grow. Their recent Google review brought that whole journey back to me. Veronique wrote about how I had been there to capture so many beautiful chapters of their journey starting with their couple shoot in 2018 then their wedding in 2020 and now their family shoots.

That means so much to me.

As a photographer I don’t want to simply hand someone a gallery of pretty photographs and disappear. I love building that connection with my clients and becoming the person they think of when another important chapter comes along. I have photographed many families over the years and seeing them again as their lives change is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Veronique described how comfortable I make them feel and how I allow moments to unfold naturally while capturing the love, laughter and emotions in between. That is exactly what I want my photography to feel like. I don’t want people to spend their entire shoot worrying about how they look or wondering whether they are posing correctly. I want them to enjoy the people they are with and let me capture what happens naturally.

And sometimes those little in-between moments end up becoming the photographs that mean the most.

Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding I Still Remember

The Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding of Veronique and Melrick may have taken place years ago but their photographs are still part of a much bigger story for me. I have photographed their family several times since their Stellenbosch Community Hall wedding and every time I see them I am reminded of how lucky I am that my work allows me to follow people through different stages of their lives.
