There is something incredibly special about a small wedding. When the guest list is intimate and the day is shared with only the people closest to you, there is often a beautiful sense of connection that you can feel throughout the entire celebration. Guthren and Oelof Vorster’s wedding at Cape Vermeer was exactly that kind of day.
Their wedding was small and intimate with a close group of people there to celebrate with them. There was no need for a huge crowd or an elaborate production because the focus was simply on the two of them and the people they loved. As a photographer, these are the kinds of weddings where I really enjoy being able to slow down and capture all those little moments that make the day personal.
From the beautiful coral and orange details to the proteas, the gorgeous cake and one of the most thoughtful wedding favours I have seen, there were so many details that made this wedding feel like Guthren and Oelof.
A Beautiful Small Wedding at Cape Vermeer
Cape Vermeer provided such a lovely setting for their day. There is something about an intimate celebration in a beautiful venue that allows the wedding to feel relaxed and personal rather than overwhelming.
With a small wedding, the people surrounding you become such an important part of the story. Every hug feels meaningful. Every conversation seems a little more personal and there is more opportunity to actually spend time with the people who have come to celebrate with you.
That feeling came through so beautifully during Guthren and Oelof’s small wedding.
As I moved through the day with my camera, I wasn’t just looking for the big moments. I was looking for the little pieces of their story too. Those are often the photographs that become some of my favourites when I look back at a gallery years later.
Guthren’s Timeless Wedding Dress
Guthren wore a beautiful timeless white wedding dress from Bride&co. There is something about a classic white wedding dress that never really goes out of style and hers suited her beautifully.
Her bridesmaids wore gorgeous dark coral-orange dresses which brought a lovely warmth into the photographs. The colour worked so well with the flowers and the other details throughout the wedding.
The coral and orange tones were also carried through into Guthren’s bouquet. Proteas were used for the bridal flowers and the bridesmaids also carried proteas which gave the whole floral design a wonderful South African character.
I loved how the flowers weren’t just an afterthought. They became part of the visual story of the day.
Oelof Had a Little Secret
Oelof looked incredibly smart in a black suit with a red shirt. The darker colours gave his look a strong contrast against Guthren’s white dress and the warmer coral tones of the wedding.
But there was a little surprise underneath his suit.
His shirt had “World’s Best Fiancé” written on it.
I absolutely love details like this because they are so personal. It is something that could easily have gone unnoticed by most of the guests but it was such a fun little part of Oelof’s wedding outfit.
These are the kinds of details I love discovering while photographing a wedding. They might not be part of the traditional wedding checklist but they tell you something about the people getting married.
Coral, Orange and Proteas at this small wedding
The colour palette of this small wedding was warm and romantic with coral and orange tones appearing throughout the flowers and decor.
The proteas were particularly beautiful and gave the small wedding a natural South African feel. I love photographing proteas because of their texture and shape. They have so much personality that they can make a bouquet feel completely different from more traditional wedding flowers.
The flowers were also incorporated into the centrepieces which helped tie everything together.
There was a lovely consistency between the bridal flowers, the bridesmaids and the reception decor without everything feeling too matched or overly formal.
It was elegant but still warm.
The Wedding Cake
Then there was the cake.
The cake from Sweet Lion Heart Bakery was absolutely beautiful. It had a soft beige colour with delicate handcrafted flowers decorating it which fitted perfectly with the overall style of the day.
I loved how understated it was while still being incredibly detailed.
The handmade flowers gave it such a personal feel and the softer colour worked beautifully with the coral and orange tones used elsewhere.
A wedding cake is one of those details that deserves a place in the gallery because so much thought often goes into choosing it. Years later, those photographs become part of the visual memory of how the reception looked.
And this was definitely a cake worth photographing.
“Let the Love Grow”
But if there is one detail from Guthren and Oelof’s small wedding that really stayed with me, it was their thank-you gift for their guests.
They gave their guests seeds.
The message was “Let the love grow.”
I thought this was absolutely beautiful.
It was simple but incredibly meaningful. Instead of giving their guests something that would simply sit on a shelf or disappear after the wedding, they gave them something that could actually grow.
It also fitted so perfectly with the idea of marriage.
Love grows.
Relationships grow.
Families grow.
Life changes and develops into new chapters.
Then, to make the gesture even more personal, Guthren and Oelof also wrote handwritten letters for their guests.
I really loved this.
There is something different about receiving something that someone has actually taken the time to write by hand. In a world where so much communication happens digitally, a handwritten letter feels incredibly personal.
For me, that little detail said so much about the couple.
Their wedding wasn’t about impressing everyone.
It was about showing appreciation to the people who were there.

I have photographed many different types of weddings over the years and every couple has their own idea of what their perfect wedding day looks like.
Some couples dream of a huge celebration with hundreds of guests.
Others want something much smaller.
And I think a small wedding can be just as beautiful and meaningful as a huge celebration.
Sometimes there is actually something lovely about keeping the guest list small. You get to spend the day with the people who are genuinely important to you and there is less pressure to divide your attention between a huge number of guests.
From a photography perspective, it also gives me more opportunities to capture those personal interactions.
The way someone looks at the bride.
The hug between old friends.
The laughter around the table.
The little conversations happening between photographs.
Those moments are part of the wedding story too.

When I photograph a small wedding, I don’t want the photographs to feel stiff or overly posed.
My style has always been about finding the balance between natural moments and gentle guidance. Some couples are incredibly comfortable in front of a camera while others need a little help.
That is completely normal.
You don’t have to know how to pose.
You don’t have to be models.
You just need to be yourselves.
I will guide you when you need it and step back when the moment is happening naturally. I want to capture the relationship between two people rather than simply putting them into a series of poses.
That is especially important with intimate weddings because so much of the beauty comes from the connections between people.
A small wedding That Felt Like Them
One of my favourite things about Guthren and Oelof’s wedding was how personal it felt.
Nothing seemed to be there simply because it was expected to be there.
The coral and orange colours gave the wedding its own personality. The proteas added a beautiful natural touch. Oelof’s secret shirt brought a little humour into his wedding outfit and the handmade flowers on the cake added another personal detail.
Then there were those little seed gifts and handwritten letters.
“Let the love grow.”
It was such a beautiful message to give to the people who had come to celebrate their marriage.
Looking back at this small wedding, I think those are the details that make the photographs so special.
They weren’t just decorations.
They were memories.

Why This small wedding Stands Out to Me
There are certain weddings that stay in my memory for very specific reasons.
Guthren and Oelof’s wedding is one of those.
I remember the beautiful coral-orange bridesmaid dresses. I remember the proteas. I remember Guthren’s timeless white dress and Oelof’s black suit with his red shirt.
I remember the beautiful cake with its handcrafted flowers.
But most of all, I remember the thought that went into the little things.
The seeds.
The handwritten letters.
“Let the love grow.”
That is what I love about wedding photography. It gives me the opportunity to preserve things that might otherwise only exist for one day.
The flowers eventually fade. The cake gets eaten. The dress gets packed away and the decorations are taken down.
But the photographs remain.
Final Thoughts
Guthren and Oelof’s small wedding at Cape Vermeer was intimate, beautiful and incredibly personal.
It reminded me that a wedding doesn’t need hundreds of guests or extravagant details to be meaningful. Sometimes the most beautiful celebrations are the ones where the people, the love and the little personal touches are allowed to take centre stage.
From the warm coral and orange colours to the proteas and beautiful cake, there was so much for me to photograph. But the seed gifts and handwritten letters were probably the detail that stayed with me the most.
