There are certain weddings that I remember because of the venue or a particular photograph, but there are also weddings that stay with me because of the people. Lelanie and Ashley’s wedding at Groenvlei Guest Farm is one of those weddings. Looking through their photographs again, what stands out most is how naturally they were together. There was a warmth between them that didn’t need any direction from me and those are always some of my favourite couples to photograph.
A wedding day can be full of beautiful details, carefully chosen flowers and months of planning but when I am behind the camera, I am always looking beyond those things. I want to see the relationship between the couple, the way they interact with their family and friends and all those small moments that happen without anyone thinking about the camera. With Lelanie and Ashley, there was plenty of that.
Their wedding brought together romantic colours, beautiful floral details and the peaceful surroundings of Groenvlei Guest Farm, creating a day that was both elegant and personal.

Groenvlei Guest Farm wedding venue is a beautiful family-run grape farm situated between the Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch Winelands, approximately 17 kilometres outside Stellenbosch. Surrounded by vineyards and countryside, the farm has a peaceful atmosphere that immediately gives a wedding a sense of being away from the busy city while still being close enough to Cape Town for guests to travel comfortably.
One of the things that makes the Groenvlei Guest Farm wedding venue particularly special for photography is the landscape. The vineyards stretch around the property and there are beautiful views towards Table Mountain, including the romantic sunsets the farm is known for. It gives a wedding photographer plenty of opportunities to use the surroundings without making the venue itself more important than the couple.

Along with the wedding venue, the farm offers a four-star guest house and self-catering accommodation. There is even The Macaron Boutique, a small bakery on the farm specialising in macarons and cakes.

From the photographs, one thing is very clear about Lelanie and Ashley: they genuinely enjoy being together.
There was an ease between them that made photographing their couple portraits feel natural. They didn’t need to constantly be told where to stand or how to interact because so much of their connection happened without any prompting. I could simply give them a little space and watch those natural moments unfold.
That is the kind of wedding photography I enjoy most.
I don’t want couples to spend their wedding day feeling as though they have to perform for the camera. There will always be a few photographs where I guide you into a particular position or ask you to look towards me, but some of the most beautiful images happen when you forget that I am there.

Lelanie looked beautiful in her white lace wedding dress. The lace added a delicate texture to her bridal portraits and suited the romantic feeling of the day perfectly.

I have always enjoyed photographing the details around bridal preparation because there is such a lovely mixture of excitement and anticipation during those moments. The bride knows that she is about to walk into an entirely different chapter of her life and everyone around her is busy making sure those final details are perfect.
The dress, the flowers, the hair and make-up and the little moments shared with the bridal party all become part of the beginning of the wedding story.

Ashley brought his own personality into the wedding with a pink and purple-toned suit. It was a beautiful choice and worked particularly well with the colours used throughout the wedding.
While the other men in the bridal party wore black suits, Ashley’s lighter and more colourful suit immediately made him stand out as the groom. It also connected naturally with the pink and rose gold styling that appeared throughout the reception.
I always love seeing couples make choices that feel like their own rather than simply following what is considered traditional. Your wedding photographs should reflect who you are as a couple and sometimes a small personal decision can make a huge difference to the character of the final gallery.

For Lelanie and Ashley, that meant capturing the romantic styling but also keeping the focus on their relationship. The venue was Groenvlei Guest Farm & Venue, with hair and make-up by La-Isla Hartzenberg. The décor was provided by Mac Style Hire, while Lelanie’s dress was from Natasha. M-Kor created the wedding cake and Blomakiti provided the flowers.
The music and entertainment were provided by Wilber Van de Linde and Crew. Ashley’s suit came from Mr Suit Hire Parow while Rodger Johannes provided the wedding car. The bridesmaids’ dresses were by Nita and Juanita Neethling and the flower girl dresses were by Shireen.
