Justine & Wayne Poole | Cathkin Caterers Wedding

Some weddings just have a certain feeling to them and Justine and Wayne’s Cathkin Caterers wedding is one that has stayed with me. From the moment I met them I could see how naturally they fitted together. They were both such lovely, soft-spoken people and there was something incredibly genuine about the way they interacted with each other.

Their wedding brought together a beautiful palette of purple, grey and white with elegant details throughout the day. Nothing needed to be overdone because the combination of colours and carefully chosen details already created such a timeless look.

Getting Ready

Justine looked absolutely stunning in her white wedding dress from Bridal Allure. The dress had beautiful lace detailing which added softness and texture while her elegant updo completed the look perfectly. It was a classic bridal look but still had plenty of personality and suited her so well.

Her bridesmaids wore gorgeous purple dresses from Sybill Bird. The deep purple worked beautifully against the white of Justine’s dress and would later tie in with the flowers and reception decor.

Wayne and his groomsmen kept things smart and classic with grey. Wayne wore a grey suit with a crisp white shirt and grey bowtie while the groomsmen wore grey trousers with white shirts and suspenders. It created a relaxed but polished look that worked perfectly with the overall wedding colour scheme.

And then there was the car.

Justine arrived in a beautiful old black classic Volvo from Cape Town Cars. I remember thinking how perfectly it suited the wedding. There was something about that vintage car that added another timeless element to the day and it made for some lovely photographs as well.

One of my favourite parts of photographing Justine and Wayne’s Cathkin Caterers wedding was taking the couple and bridal party photographs at the University of Cape Town wedding photos.

UCT has such a distinctive setting. Its Upper Campus sits on the slopes of Devil’s Peak and the combination of historic buildings, stonework, greenery and mountain surroundings creates an incredible backdrop for wedding photography.

The university itself has a long history. What began as the South African College in 1829 eventually developed into the University of Cape Town. The institution expanded significantly during the late 19th century and became a fully fledged university in 1900 before officially receiving university status in 1918.

Today the campus has that wonderful combination of history and natural surroundings which makes it such an interesting place to photograph. For Justine and Wayne it gave us plenty of different backgrounds while still keeping the photographs focused on them.

I loved photographing the two of them together because they didn’t need to do much. They simply fitted together. Their connection was quiet rather than loud and I think that comes through in their photographs.

That is something I really enjoy as a photographer. Not every couple needs big dramatic poses or elaborate direction. Sometimes the most beautiful photographs happen when two people are simply comfortable standing close to each other and being themselves.

Purple, Grey and White Details

The reception at Cathkin Caterers wedding venue continued the colour palette with purple and white flowers mixed with greenery. The tables were round with beautiful floral centrepieces that immediately caught your eye. Rather than filling the tables with lots of unnecessary details the flowers became the main feature at Cathkin Caterers wedding venue.

Purple and white flowers were arranged together with touches of green foliage and surrounded by plates and glasses ready for the reception at Cathkin Caterers wedding venue. The simplicity allowed the flowers to stand out and kept the overall look elegant.

The stationery also fitted beautifully into the theme. Purple flowers and leaf details carried the same feeling through the paper goods which helped everything feel connected from one part of the wedding to the next.

Then there was the cake.

It was a gorgeous three-tier creation with each layer bringing something different to the design. The bottom tier had a beautiful white and purple marble effect while the middle tier was white. The top tier had a textured finish that looked almost like nuts coated in white chocolate and it was decorated with purple and white flowers.

It was definitely one of those cakes that looked almost too beautiful to cut!

A Couple Who Just Fit at Cathkin Caterers wedding venue

When I look back at this wedding I don’t just remember the colour scheme or the beautiful cake. I remember Justine and Wayne.

They were one of those couples who simply seemed to belong together. They were both gentle, friendly and soft-spoken and there was a natural ease between them. Nothing felt forced when I photographed them at Cathkin Caterers wedding venue.

That makes such a difference when you are behind the camera.

My job isn’t only to take photographs. I want my couples to feel comfortable enough that I can capture who they actually are together. Sometimes that means giving a little direction and sometimes it means stepping back and allowing a moment to happen.

With Justine and Wayne I could simply let their connection speak for itself.

Their wedding was elegant without being overly complicated. The purple, grey and white colour palette worked beautifully. The classic black Volvo added character. UCT gave us an incredible location for their photographs and the reception at Cathkin Caterers wedding venue brought everything together with flowers, stationery and carefully chosen details.

It was a wedding that had its own personality.

A Wedding to Remember at Cathkin Caterers wedding venue

The Cathkin Caterers wedding celebration brought everyone together for a beautiful day filled with family, friends, good food and plenty of memories. Cathkin Caterers wedding venue has been operating in Cape Town for more than 30 years and offers catering and function services from its Tuscan Villa setting. The venue can accommodate large celebrations and the business places a strong emphasis on food and service.

For Justine and Wayne’s day the focus remained on celebrating their marriage with the people closest to them. After spending time photographing them around UCT I loved being able to continue documenting the reception details at Cathkin Caterers wedding venue and the atmosphere of their celebration.

Years later, I can still look at their gallery and remember how everything came together. The purple flowers. The grey suits. Justine’s beautiful lace dress. Theclassic Volvo. The three-tier cake. The elegant table settings. And of course the couple themselves.

Some weddings are simply easy to remember.

This is definitely one of them.
